GETTING STARTED
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the world of the GT HEADER. The program consists of a
number of files. If you downloaded the program (Header12.zip) from
a bulletin board, you should have the following files:
Header.EXE - The main program
Header.CNF - The main programs data file
Header.DOC - This documentation package
Header.BBS - Source Directory Listing
HfConfig.EXE - Configure File
Hedit.exe - interactive editor/mover
Hinstall.exe - Install Serial Number for registration
The first thing to do is to make a backup copy of the program disk,
or copy the complete archive to a disk. Keep this in a safe place.
Most computer users hate to hear the word backup. Believe me!
Make backup copies of the data files regularly. That way, if the
worst happens you can always restore the last backup copy of the
files and continue to work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GT HEADER
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The GT HEADER is a relatively simple program designed to add a header
containing information about the file directory for the user. The
current file header is as follows:
Welcome to the [Your Board's Name]
Communications Files Directory
Updated: 11/4/1989
Total Files: 7 Total Bytes: 224,000
______________________________________________________________________
File Name Size Date Off Description______________________
BASE.ZIP 3 10-09-85 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
DTPBBS09.ZIP 6 9-26-89 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
MTE.ZIP 17 4-15-88 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
GT Header is a self-contained files.?bs creation program. When
run Header will create the above header details in each directory
specified in the user-created Header.BBS file.
If the Header.BBS file is not found, the program defaults to using
the GTDir.BBS file. The program will search the current directory,
or the default directory specified in the configure program,
looking for the Header.CNF and the Header.BBS files. If Header
defaults to the \GTDir.bbs, the directory parsing routines will
ignore any file directory with an access level of 0 (Sysop)
in the GTDir.BBS.
Header can be run from within its own directory, if the
auxilliary files reside in that directory or in the default
directory.
When it creates the files.?bs, header reads the current
files.bbs into memory and compares the directory to the
files.bbs. If the files.bbs is not present, Header will create
the file. If you have any pre-existing header lines or info,
Header will ignore any line that has a blank in the first
column, when writing the information to the new files.bbs & .cbs;
therefore, if you have any pre-existing headers that do
not use the first column, Header will replace them. If they do
use the first column, you will have to physically delete them
prior to using GT Header.
There are 5 parameters that can be passed to GT HEADER. These are:
*XXXX - This is the CRC value (Registered Version) and must be on
the command line to activate the registered
version.
/c - This switch selects the color mode to create files.cbs
custom colored to your specifications.
-8-
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GT HEADER (cont'd)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
/f - This switch allows you to use a preconfigured files
list like GTDir.BBS to tell header which file
directories to search. If you use the default
GTDir.BBS this switch is not necessary. If you
choose to use any other file name, it must be
specified here with no space, even if you use the
header.bbs file.
/a - This switch will allow you to maintain the newfiles
part of the files.bbs until the date specified by
this switch. On switch date or the next time you
run the header program, the new files will be added
to the regular directory.
/n - must be used with Hedit otherwise errors will
occur. This has been added for future modification
to allow individual selectivity of the New files
option.
i.e.
Header /c *xxxx /fYourFile.BBS /a12-30-89
(the space is required between parameters)
(the hyphens are required in the /a parameter)
(The format for the date where the month is less)
(10 is : 1-05-90).
This command will cause the program to create both the *.cbs and
the *.bbs files, using the YourFile.bbs as the directory source.
Using the command with just the CRC will only create the *.bbs.
*****************************************************************
*****************************************************************
WARNING: This version of header uses an internal formatting
technique to recognize which files have been moved into the
current directory.
DO NOT USE ANY OTHER PROGRAM TO VALIDATE YOUR FILES AREAS OR
YOU WILL LOOSE THE INTERNAL FORMATTING. IT WILL NOT WORK
WITH FIXBBS!
If you copy files using DOS, the program should mark them as
new files, however, the file description will be lost and a
default "No description available" will be use in its place.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GT HEADER (cont'd)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have included a configure program that permits you to choose the
colors you wish to use for the various items of the header. This
program also allows you to set the GT Path variable and change your
board's name. The GT path must be set as the program reads this
variable is read directly from the DOS environment and should not
be changed unless it is not correct.
The configure program's color customizer shows you the results of the
color combinations directly on the screen. This way you can change
the colors until you get a combination pleasing to you. If you do
not run the configure program, the defaults will be for the CAG BBS.
Hinstall.exe
The Hinstall program was written to install a serial number
issued by the CAG Development group enabling you to register the
GT Header. The program when run asks for a valid serial number.
Inputting that serial number registers the program. When you
recieve you serial number you will also receive the CRC that
must be on the command line to activate the registered version.
-10-
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
HEdit.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have included an interactive Editor/Mover with the GT header
system. This program has alot of important features. When you
load the program, you are presented with a screen showing your
current Header.BBS (if enabled with the /f parameter) or the
GTDIR.bbs (the default). The command looks like this:
Hedit /n /fHeader.bbs
This command will load and run the interactive editor in the
New Files mode, using the alternate file Header.BBS.
At the bottom of the main screen, and the move files screen,
there are a number of commands that can be utilized. The arrow
keys move the pointer bar up and down, page up/down work to page
through multiple files.
The commands are mostly self-explanatory; however, the Add
comment command is found on both screens. A summary:
F8 - Add Zipfile comments
On the master directory screen, it will add zipfile comments to all the files
in the highlighted directory, whereas in the move files area, it
will only work on the specifically marked files. This option
pre-supposes that you have and are using the CMT42 program by
Crater Rim software. This program is not included in the GT
header system, but is available from the Author's board. If you
use this program, you are responsible for any registration with
the author, and any liability arising from its use.
F6 - Validate Files
This option validates the currently highlighted directory adding
to the files.bbs any files recently downloaded or copied into the
directory. GT automatically appends user uploaded files to the
files.bbs. This option rewrites the files.bbs in the raw GT
State with no header information. You must run header at the
conclusion of the editing session to place the header information
in the files.?bs.
Move Files Screen
When you are in the move files area, there are a few additional
commands:
F3 - Edit Description
This allows you to change or edit the files description prior to
running header to create the files.bbs.
-11-
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
HEdit.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
F5 - Toggle New
This option allows you to toggle the new files indicator. If the
header recognizes the file as a new file (to be displayed
separately from the rest of the directory), a green ~ will appear
in the files screen. If you don't want the file to be displayed
as a new file, just toggle it until the ~ disappears.
F6 - ViewZip File
This option presupposes the existence of Samuel Smith's excellent
ZipTV program. This file is not included with GT header, but can
be downloaded from the author's board. If you use this program,
it is up to you to register it with the author. By using the
program, CAG Development Group accepts no liability arising from
its use.
F8 - Add ZipFile Comments
You may add zipfile comments to specific files marked by the
spacebar. Again this option presupposes that you are using the
file CMT42 by Sal Manaro at Crater Rim Software (See previous
discussion).
